Jack and the Beanstalk is a comedy-adventure pantomime for fourteen principals, singers, dancers and chorus.
The folk tale is followed closely in outline, but with considerable embellishments and fresh touches.
The legend of the Sword in the Stone is reflected in Jack's method of obtaining the magic sword: the Dame has a tremendous fight with the Giant's evil hench-man: the Vegetable Fairy is certainly an original creation for the usual Power of the Good - eternally Over-optimistic, frequently bungling her effects, and with - for most of the play - an oversize leek as a wand.
The climactic contest between Jack and the Giant is described in detail to avoid "a soppy couple of vague pokes from the principal boy's sword".
Special interpolations include an updated version of a famous Grimaldi comedy "baby bathing" scene.
The pantomime offers opportunities for elaborate staging, but can be produced quite simply where facilities are limited.
