Idwal Jones is on the agonized brink of first fatherhood, despite the assurances of Mrs Rees, the midwife, that all is proceeding normally. When his friend Emlyn calls with two tickets for the Rugby International, Idwal, with great reluctance, feels compelled to refuse to go. As he's "the best basso in the place", Emlyn says "Bread of Heaven" will not sound the same without him. However, when the baby, a boy, duly arrives he proves to have an unexpected present for his father, and all ends happily.
